Some things are more important than ultimate.

Chicago club co-ed Ultimate is one of the most volatile and dramatic scenes I would ever care to imagine. It certainly stands to reason that, in a sport where the elite athletes and casual BBQ crowd do not have the velvet rope and bouncer of a commercial league, salaires and scouting to seperate them, every player trying out for a team has to make every ounce of their impression on a team in 1-3 days of drills and scrimmages.
This year offered an especially brutal tryout season. Briefcase, rebuilt by hand by Rob Berg and company, saw some player poaches and one set of tryouts. Gambit, returning from their initial season of cuts, had some holes to fill. And Food and Liquor decided to hold cuts for the first time. Some players declared their allegiance to one squad. Many tried out for all.

Regionals was this past weekend in Wisconsin at the same fields as Cooler Classic. No cheese cows, but with a greater prize within our sights, Nemesis set out to claim one of the two bids to Nationals for the Central region.

Photos by Ryan Rittenhouse, who might be described as having a serious jones for mixed ultimate. Literally thousands of photos of mixed action from both days.

Congratulations to Machine and Nemesis for making nationals, and thanks for letting me follow you around all season; it’s been a lot of fun.

As if we as a community were not incestuous enough, we now work together… teaching ultimate. This Spring Edward Uram III (of Machine) and David Marincic (of Augie and, more importantly UIC) put their heads together and wrote up a grant proposal to Maggie Daley’s NPO “After School Matters.” I will spare you the details but After School Matters (ASM) is a big deal in Chicago and has helped thousands of teens in Chicago, most of whom are from poor communities, find something productive to do with their time outside of school and make some money while they’re at it. These programs are citywide and range from art to computer programming, and now, to ultimate.

Haymaker went into this weekend pumped for inarguably the most contentious matchup this Club Sectionals would see. In a field of 9 opponents, only two would get to move on to Regionals. Haymaker had been working and training since early May to prepare for this weekend and the potential of glory in Milwaukee. Last year, despite fielding a good team of athletic guys, they failed to meet the few positions of a competitive Section and were offered to attend Regionals as an afterthought, turning it down due to its placement in Nowhere, Oklahoma.
